Because I'd been away in Edmonton, we weren't able to get our Halloween pumpkins carved as early as we usually do. Normally we spend the weekend before Halloween picking out a design, making it suitable for carving, and then we do the actual carving a day or two later.
But because I was away in Edmonton, we weren't able to do our pumpkin stuff until today. Our designs weren't as complicated or original as usual, but people liked them. I've decided that the pumpkins are more for the parents of the kids than the kids themselves. The kids do see them, but they don't spend time looking at them because they're so busy getting candy from us. While the kids get candy, the parents get to check out our pumpkins.
Sadly, we only got 23 kids this year. There were lots of cute costumes and a lot of full-face masks. The masks surprised me because when I was growing up we were all told that masks were bad while trick-or-treating because the masks could impede vision. Maybe things are different now.
After giving out candy, we went to our friend's Halloween party. They've given one every year for years now. If you don't wear a costume, you have to wear something from the "tickle trunk". I wore a long black wig that I'd bought before, together with a black outfit and a couple of scarves. I called myself a witch - I figure it suits. Ian made a "prawn" hand from District 9 and wore that.

i think a major difference about masks now is that children have seeing-eye-parents to guide them on their halloween escapades.
as far as i remember, most of my childhood friends did not have their parents with them when they went trick-or-treating, so masks could be a big problem as they staggered blindly across the road, unaided.
Wow, we only got 6 kids. 6!
